AC Filters, Air Filter Replacement, and High-Efficiency Filtration
Full Nelson installs and replaces air conditioning filters that protect your cooling equipment and improve the air circulating through your home. The right filter balances airflow with particle capture to keep your system running efficiently while reducing airborne contaminants.
What AC Filters Do
Every central air conditioning system pulls return air through a filter before it crosses the evaporator coil. The filter’s primary job is protecting the equipment. Dust, pet hair, and debris that reach the evaporator coil reduce heat transfer and force the system to work harder. A secondary benefit is removing some of those same particles from the air your family breathes.
A clogged filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil, which can cause the coil to freeze, increase energy consumption, and shorten equipment life. Replacing or cleaning the filter on schedule is the single most important maintenance task a homeowner can do for their AC system.
Filter Types and MERV Ratings
Filters are rated on the MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) scale from 1 to 20. Higher MERV ratings capture smaller particles but also create more resistance to airflow. The goal is matching the filter to what your system’s blower can handle.
-
Standard Fiberglass Filters (MERV 1-4)
Basic flat fiberglass filters catch large dust particles and debris. They protect the equipment but do little for air quality. These are the least expensive option and need replacement every 30 days.
-
Pleated Filters (MERV 5-13)
Pleated filters have more surface area than flat filters, allowing them to capture smaller particles while maintaining acceptable airflow. MERV 8 to 11 is the most common range for residential systems, capturing dust mites, mold spores, pet dander, and pollen. MERV 13 filters capture some bacteria and smoke particles but may restrict airflow in systems not designed for them.
Most residential systems perform well with a MERV 8 to 11 pleated filter replaced every 60 to 90 days.
-
High-Efficiency Media Filters (MERV 14-16)
These thicker media filters use a larger filter cabinet that mounts on the return duct or furnace. The increased surface area allows high-efficiency particle capture without the airflow restriction that a standard 1-inch MERV 14+ filter would create. Full Nelson installs media filter cabinets that accommodate 4-inch or 5-inch deep filters, typically replaced once or twice per year.
Filter Replacement and Upgrades
Full Nelson replaces AC filters during maintenance visits and installs upgraded filtration systems for homeowners who want better air quality performance.
Filter upgrade options include:
- Upgrading from fiberglass to pleated filters within the existing filter rack
- Installing a media filter cabinet for higher-capacity, longer-lasting filtration
- Adding a whole-home air purification system that works alongside the filter for enhanced particle and pathogen removal
How Often to Change Your AC Filter
Replacement intervals depend on the filter type, household conditions, and system runtime.
- Standard fiberglass: every 30 days
- Pleated MERV 8-11: every 60 to 90 days
- Deep media filters (4-5 inch): every 6 to 12 months
- Homes with pets, smokers, or allergy sufferers should replace filters more frequently
A filter that looks grey and matted is overdue. Holding it up to light, you should be able to see some light passing through a clean filter. If you cannot, it needs replacement.
