20+ Years
Serving KC Metro
Family, Women & Veteran Owned • Serving the Kansas City Metro Since 2003
Full Nelson works on some of the oldest houses in the state when we come to Leavenworth. The city was founded in 1854 and was the first city incorporated in the territory of Kansas, and much of what stands today went up in the mid-to-late 19th and early 20th centuries. That housing needs technicians who have seen stone foundations, balloon framing and century-old cast iron before, not crews who only work on subdivisions built after 2000.
Leavenworth is the largest city on the north side of our service area, with 37,351 residents across 24.04 square miles as of the 2020 census. Our Kansas City office at 8525 Parallel Parkway is the closer of our two locations. As a Family, Women and Veteran owned company, we take particular pride in serving a community built around Fort Leavenworth. Learn more about our company.
20+ Years
Leavenworth contains eight National Register historic districts along with eight individually listed properties. Homes in and around those districts have been modified repeatedly over a hundred years or more, which means a single house may carry four generations of plumbing at once: original cast iron waste lines, galvanized steel supply from an early-1900s update, copper from a 1970s remodel, and PEX from something done last decade. Diagnosing a problem in that kind of house means tracing what is actually there. Full Nelson’s licensed plumbers work these homes regularly.
Century-old drain lines scale internally until the usable diameter is a fraction of what the pipe measures. Add a hundred years of tree growth over clay tile laterals and blockages become routine. Clearing the clog is the easy part. Understanding whether the line can keep working or has reached the point of replacement is what saves you money over the next decade. Full Nelson provides drain cleaning services and tells you honestly which situation you are in.
For more serious issues, we offer:
Sewer laterals in the older parts of Leavenworth are frequently vitrified clay tile, and some predate the automobile. Clay tile joints were never watertight by modern standards, and a century of root intrusion, ground movement and freeze cycles opens them further. Camera inspection is not optional on a house this old. Full Nelson runs the camera, shows you the footage, and explains your sewer repair options before quoting anything.
Our services include:
Leavenworth sits on the west bank of the Missouri River in the Dissected Till Plains, and four tributaries run east through the city: Quarry Creek, Corral Creek, Three Mile Creek and Five Mile Creek. The ground falls steadily toward the river, which means stormwater moves fast and concentrates in the low ground near those creeks. Older homes here have stone or rubble foundations that were never waterproofed. Full Nelson installs sump pumps and battery backup systems sized for basements that take on real volume.
Our services include:
Many Leavenworth homes were built for coal heat and converted to gas decades later. Those conversions added piping in stages, often by different hands over different decades, and the oldest sections are threaded black iron that has been in service far longer than anyone intended. If you smell the rotten egg odor of natural gas, hear hissing near an appliance, or notice vegetation dying over a buried line, call immediately. Full Nelson locates the leak, repairs it, and pressure tests the entire system rather than just the section that failed.
Our services include:
Bathrooms in 19th-century houses were added after the fact, usually carved out of a bedroom or a closet, and the drain lines serving them were routed to fit the existing structure rather than to ideal slope and venting. That history explains a lot of chronic toilet problems in this housing stock. Full Nelson diagnoses whether the fixture, the drain or the vent is the actual fault before recommending repair or replacement.
Our services include:
Older Leavenworth homes often have shower valves and tub fillers from manufacturers that no longer exist or that stopped making the cartridge thirty years ago. Full Nelson can tell you quickly whether a valve is still serviceable or whether the wall needs to be opened for a replacement body. We handle faucet and shower valve work and can match period-appropriate finishes where that matters to the house.
Our services include:
The Leavenworth water department reports hardness of roughly 106 parts per million, about 6.2 grains per gallon. That is harder than the WaterOne supply serving Johnson County and softer than the Board of Public Utilities supply in Kansas City, Kansas. Sediment picked up from aging distribution mains is a more common complaint here than hardness itself. Full Nelson tests at your tap and recommends filtration based on what is actually in your supply.
Our services include:
At 6.2 grains per gallon, Leavenworth water leaves scale in water heaters, deposits on fixtures, and shortens the working life of appliances that heat water. A properly sized softener slows that down. Full Nelson measures hardness, reviews your household usage, and sizes a softener to that rather than installing a standard unit everywhere.
Our services include:
Leavenworth County has substantial rural acreage outside the city limits where properties draw from private wells. When a submersible pump fails or a pressure tank bladder ruptures, the whole property loses water. Full Nelson diagnoses well system faults and replaces pumps, pressure tanks, pressure switches and related components.
Our services include:
Excavating on a property in a historic district means working around mature trees, original stone walls, brick walks and street frontage that the city and the neighbors both care about. Full Nelson provides excavation services that complete the repair properly while keeping disruption contained, and we recommend trenchless methods wherever the site allows.
Water service lines in older Leavenworth neighborhoods have been in the ground for many decades and in some cases far longer. Corrosion, root pressure and ground movement all take a toll. Look for a wet patch that never dries, a drop in pressure throughout the house, or a water bill that rose without a change in habits. Full Nelson locates the fault and completes water main line repair or replacement.
We offer:
When camera inspection shows a clay tile lateral with collapsed sections, multiple root masses or a significant belly, spot repairs stop making sense. Full Nelson handles sewer line excavation and installs modern materials rated to serve the house for generations rather than patching a line that will fail again next year.
Our services include:
Properties on the edges of Leavenworth and out into the county rely on septic systems. Slow drains throughout the house, gurgling in the pipes, sewage odor in the yard or saturated ground over the tank all indicate a system needing attention. Full Nelson inspects septic systems and completes the repairs needed to restore function.
Our services include:
The lateral field disperses treated effluent into the surrounding soil for final filtration. Sloped ground and clay-heavy soil, both common around Leavenworth, make lateral field design and repair less forgiving than on flat, well-draining sites. Full Nelson evaluates lateral field damage and performs repair or full replacement.
Our services include:
Trenchless work has real value in Leavenworth’s older neighborhoods, where the ground between the house and the street may hold a century-old tree, a stone retaining wall, a brick walk, or all three. Pipe bursting and pipe lining confine excavation to access pits at each end of the damaged run. Full Nelson evaluates whether trenchless methods will work on your property and explains the limits honestly.

Fast & Reliable
Water heater replacement in a 19th-century house is rarely a straight swap. Basement access can be narrow, ceiling height is often low, and existing venting may run into a masonry chimney that no longer meets code for a modern appliance. Full Nelson handles water heater repair and installation in these conditions and prices the work honestly, including whatever the venting actually requires.
Gas water heaters heat faster and cost less to run than electric models. Pilot assemblies that will not stay lit, failed thermocouples and sediment buildup that causes rumbling are the usual failures. Harder water accelerates sediment accumulation, which is worth knowing at Leavenworth hardness levels. Full Nelson services all major brands and installs replacement gas units properly vented for the house they go into.
Same Day
Electric water heaters serve homes where gas is unavailable or where running a new line into a converted space is impractical. Heating elements burn out, thermostats fail, and tank interiors corrode until they leak. Scale from harder water shortens element life. Full Nelson diagnoses the fault and advises whether repair or replacement is the better decision.
Tankless units heat on demand and eliminate the standby loss of keeping a full tank hot around the clock. They also recover floor space in the tight basements common in older Leavenworth homes. Because local water carries meaningful hardness, tankless heat exchangers here need descaling on a regular schedule. Full Nelson services tankless systems from all manufacturers and installs new units.
Hybrid water heaters use heat pump technology to pull warmth from surrounding air rather than generating heat electrically. They need a space that stays above 40 degrees year-round and enough air volume to work against. Not every old Leavenworth basement qualifies. Full Nelson evaluates the space before recommending a hybrid system and installs and services these units.
Stay Comfortable Year-Round
Northeast Kansas winters bring ice storms and extended cold that test any heating system, and they test century-old houses harder than most. Full Nelson acquired a 25-year Kansas City HVAC company in 2019, adding decades of heating experience to our plumbing foundation.

Many Leavenworth homes were built before forced-air heating existed. Some still run boilers and radiators. Others were converted to forced air by threading ductwork through balloon-framed wall cavities and closets, which produces uneven room-to-room temperatures that no thermostat setting will fix. Full Nelson provides furnace repair for all makes and models and, when it is time to replace, sizes equipment to the house as it exists rather than to a nameplate.
Our services include:
Heat pumps deliver heating and cooling from one outdoor unit, and cold-climate models hold efficiency well below freezing. For Leavenworth homes without adequate ductwork, a heat pump paired with ductless indoor units is often a better answer than forcing a conventional system into a structure that was never designed for it. Full Nelson provides heat pump service for all brands.
Our services include:
Older houses are leakier than new construction, and heated winter air in a leaky house drops to very low humidity. That causes static shocks, dry skin, irritated sinuses, and it opens joints in original woodwork, floors and trim that are difficult and expensive to restore. Full Nelson installs whole-home humidifiers, high-efficiency filters and UV light systems.
Our services include:
Breathe Easier
Kansas summers push into the 90s with humidity that makes it feel hotter, and houses built before air conditioning existed do not shed that heat well. Full Nelson provides air conditioning services throughout Leavenworth and Leavenworth County.

Refrigerant leaks cut capacity, dirty coils block heat transfer, and failing capacitors force compressors to work against themselves. Full Nelson technicians diagnose the actual fault and complete AC repairs that restore cooling. When equipment has reached the end of its service life, we install properly sized replacements.
Our services include:
Mini splits matter more in Leavenworth than in most of the metro. A meaningful share of the housing stock predates ductwork entirely, and threading ducts through a balloon-framed 19th-century house is invasive, expensive, and often impossible without damaging original plaster and trim. Mini splits deliver heating and cooling room by room with a three-inch penetration through the wall. They also suit third-floor conversions, carriage houses and additions.
Old basements with stone foundations hold moisture, and that moisture migrates upward through the house all summer. Whole-home dehumidifiers address it more effectively than running the air conditioner harder. Combined with upgraded filtration and UV treatment, they make a real difference in houses of this age.
Ductwork retrofitted into an old house leaks at seams that were never sealed to current standards, and much of it runs through unconditioned basements and attics. Full Nelson provides duct cleaning to clear accumulated debris and duct sealing to stop conditioned air from leaking into spaces you are not trying to heat or cool.
Leavenworth sits at the edge of the metro grid with mature tree cover through the older neighborhoods and long rural feeder lines running out into the county. Ice storms and summer straight-line winds take those lines down, and outages here can run longer than in the denser suburbs simply because crews have more ground to cover. A standby generator starts automatically within seconds and keeps the refrigerator, HVAC system, sump pump and lights running.
Full Nelson sizes generators to your home’s actual electrical load and handles the complete installation, including the automatic transfer switch and fuel connection.
For Local Businesses
Leavenworth’s commercial base includes a 28-block historic shopping district downtown along with the businesses that serve Fort Leavenworth, the largest employer in the area with roughly 5,600 people, the Department of Veterans Affairs Eastern Kansas Health Care System, and Leavenworth Public Schools. Restaurants, retail and professional offices in century-old downtown buildings present real HVAC challenges, including limited roof structure, tight mechanical rooms and existing systems that were adapted rather than designed. Full Nelson provides commercial HVAC services and commercial plumbing.
