20+ Years
Serving KC Metro
Family, Women & Veteran Owned • Serving the Kansas City Metro Since 2003
Full Nelson serves Kearney homeowners with plumbing, heating and air conditioning work built on clear explanations and technical skill. Kearney sits in north central Clay County at the intersection of Interstate 35 and Missouri Route 92, spread across 13.334 square miles, with 10,404 residents at the 2020 census and an estimated 11,215 by 2024.
Kearney has the newest housing stock in the northern metro. The median home here was built in 2002, and 200 units have gone up since 2020 alone. Newer homes still fail, they just fail on a different schedule and for different reasons. Learn more about our company.
20+ Years
Kearney was settled in 1856 and officially incorporated in 1869, and it spent most of its history as a small agricultural and livestock community. The growth is recent: 8,381 residents in 2010 to 10,404 in 2020, a 24.1 percent increase, and the housing tells the same story. Of roughly 4,406 units, 1,156 were built between 2000 and 2009 and another 1,064 between 2010 and 2019. Only 150 predate 1940.
That profile changes what we find. Builder-grade equipment is specified to code and to budget rather than to longevity, and the first wave installed during the 2000s build-out is now reaching the age where water heaters, air conditioners and softeners start giving out. Because those subdivisions went up together, the equipment ages out together. Full Nelson’s licensed plumbers work across Kearney’s small historic core and its newer neighborhoods alike.
Drain problems in newer Kearney homes usually come from installation and settling rather than deteriorated pipe. A line laid at marginal slope passes inspection and still holds solids once the ground beneath it drops a fraction of an inch. There is a second factor here that most suburbs do not have, and it is worth knowing about.
Kearney’s sewer system is described by the city as handling both sanitary flows and stormwater during rainfall through combined sewers. In a combined system, heavy rain raises the level in the mains, and that can push back toward the lowest fixtures in a house. A floor drain or basement fixture that backs up specifically during a downpour and at no other time is telling you something different from a routine blockage. Full Nelson provides drain cleaning services and works out which of the two you actually have.
For more serious issues, we offer:
Kearney runs its own treatment facility, processing over 900,000 gallons of wastewater a day across roughly 2,500 acres of watershed, with a permitted capacity of 1.25 million gallons per day. The laterals feeding it are mostly modern plastic in ground that is still settling, which produces bellies rather than corrosion. Camera inspection distinguishes a low spot holding water from a genuine failure. Full Nelson runs the camera, shows you the footage, and explains your sewer repair options honestly, including when the answer is that the line is sound.
Our services include:
Two things make basement drainage worth taking seriously in Kearney. New subdivisions are graded before landscaping establishes, so drainage patterns keep shifting for years. And the combined sewer arrangement means heavy rain loads the system at exactly the moment groundwater is highest.
Builder-installed sump pumps are typically the minimum unit that satisfies the requirement, with no backup at all. Full Nelson installs sump pumps and battery backup systems sized to what your lot actually produces, and we can discuss backwater protection for houses where the combined system is a factor.
Our services include:
Natural gas heats most Kearney homes and feeds water heaters, ranges, dryers and outdoor grills. In newer construction, leaks turn up more often at connections made during the build or at lines added afterward for a patio kitchen, fire pit or shop. If you smell the rotten egg odor of natural gas, hear hissing near an appliance, or see vegetation dying over a buried line, call immediately. Full Nelson locates the leak, repairs it, and pressure tests the system.
Our services include:
Builder-grade toilets are chosen on price, and many flush poorly once the rim jets scale over. At Kearney’s hardness that scaling happens faster than it does on softer supplies. A running toilet adds hundreds of gallons to the monthly bill. Full Nelson diagnoses whether the fault is the fixture, the drain line or the vent, and completes repairs or installs a better-performing replacement.
Our services include:
Builder-grade faucets and shower valves use lighter internal components than the same manufacturer’s retail lines, and mineral content accelerates that wear. A shower valve that will not hold temperature in a twenty-year-old house is usually a worn cartridge rather than a failed valve body, which makes it an inexpensive fix when diagnosed correctly. Full Nelson repairs faucets and shower valves from all major manufacturers.
Our services include:
Kearney runs a genuine hybrid water system, which is unusual in this metro. The city operates its own drinking water plant on three wells producing more than 700,000 gallons a day, and supplements that with water purchased from Kansas City. Water quality is monitored around the clock and tested every two hours to meet Missouri Department of Natural Resources requirements. Distribution runs through three towers, and the city’s business park materials list water capacity at 3.9 million gallons per day.
A hybrid supply means the blend at your tap can shift with demand, which is worth knowing if you have noticed the water tasting different at different times of year. Full Nelson tests at your tap and recommends filtration based on measured results.
Our services include:
Kearney’s own system reports carbonate hardness at 151 mg/L, the hardest published figure of any municipal system in the northern metro. That is meaningfully harder than Excelsior Springs at 112 or the purchased supplies serving Platte City and Pleasant Valley.
Hardness at that level leaves scale inside water heaters, dishwashers and any appliance that heats water, and in a house where all that equipment was installed at the same time during the build, it is working on all of it at once. Full Nelson measures hardness at your address, because a blended supply does not always match the published plant figure, and sizes a softener to your household and your actual water.
Our services include:
Clay County has substantial rural acreage outside Kearney where properties draw from private wells. When a submersible pump fails or a pressure tank bladder ruptures, the property loses water entirely, and on acreage that also means no water for livestock or outbuildings. Full Nelson diagnoses well system faults and replaces pumps, pressure tanks, pressure switches and related components.
Our services include:
At 13.334 square miles for 10,404 people, Kearney has longer buried runs than a dense suburb, modern pipe sitting in soil that is still settling, and rural acreage beyond the mains. Full Nelson provides excavation services and recommends trenchless methods where site conditions allow.
The water service line from the meter to the house carries every gallon the household uses. In newer construction, failures usually trace to the installation or to ground movement rather than to age. Watch for a wet patch that never dries, pressure that dropped throughout the house, or a bill that rose without a change in habits. Full Nelson locates the fault and completes water main line repair or replacement.
We offer:
When camera inspection shows a belly holding standing water, a separated joint or pipe crushed by construction traffic, the repair means excavating to the affected section and correcting the bedding underneath. Laying new pipe into the same conditions that failed the old one produces the same result again. Full Nelson handles sewer line excavation and corrects the underlying cause.
Our services include:
Properties outside the city sewer system rely on septic tanks to treat household wastewater. Slow drains throughout the house, gurgling in the pipes, sewage odor in the yard and saturated ground over the tank all indicate a system needing attention. Full Nelson inspects septic systems and completes the repairs needed to restore function.
Our services include:
The lateral field disperses treated effluent into surrounding soil for final filtration, and it depends on that soil accepting water at a workable rate. In the Fishing River headwaters region, seasonal groundwater rises and reduces that capacity, which is why fields that worked for years can start surfacing after a wet spring. Full Nelson evaluates lateral field damage and performs repair or complete replacement.
Our services include:
Newer Kearney lots typically carry irrigation systems, recent hardscape and trees that have finally established. A full trench removes all of it. On rural acreage the length of the run is the cost. Trenchless methods confine excavation to access pits at each end of the damaged section. Full Nelson evaluates whether trenchless work suits your property and explains where it does not.

Fast & Reliable
Kearney combines two things that shorten water heater life: builder-grade tanks installed at minimum spec, and the hardest municipal water in the northern metro at 151 mg/L. Scale builds in the bottom of a tank, causes the rumbling, costs efficiency and eventually ends the tank. A large share of Kearney’s tanks went in during the 2000s build-out, which means they are hitting that point together. Full Nelson provides water heater repair and installation and will tell you plainly whether yours is worth repairing.
Gas water heaters heat faster and cost less to operate than electric models. Pilot assemblies that will not stay lit, failed thermocouples and sediment accumulation that causes rumbling are the common failures, and sediment builds fastest in a tank that has never been flushed on water this hard. Full Nelson services all major brands and installs replacement gas units sized to your household rather than to a builder’s minimum.
Same Day
Electric water heaters serve homes where gas is unavailable, including acreage beyond the gas service area. Heating elements burn out, thermostats fail, and tank interiors corrode until they leak. At 151 mg/L, scale on the elements shortens their life noticeably. Full Nelson diagnoses the fault and advises whether repair or replacement is the better decision.
Tankless units heat on demand and remove the standby loss of keeping forty or fifty gallons hot around the clock. They are a good answer for a household that has outgrown a minimum-spec tank. One caution specific to Kearney: at this hardness, tankless heat exchangers need descaling more often than a generic annual schedule assumes, and a unit that is not serviced on the right interval will lose output and eventually fault. Full Nelson services tankless systems from all manufacturers and sets the interval to your water.
Hybrid water heaters use heat pump technology to pull warmth from surrounding air rather than generating it electrically, using far less energy than resistance elements. They need a space that stays above 40 degrees year-round with adequate air volume. Full Nelson installs and services hybrid systems and evaluates whether your utility space suits one.
Stay Comfortable Year-Round
Missouri winters bring ice storms, sub-zero stretches and extended cold, and Kearney sits in Tornado Alley with the severe weather exposure that comes with it. Full Nelson acquired a 25-year Kansas City HVAC company in 2019, adding decades of heating experience to our plumbing foundation.

Furnaces in newer Kearney homes are usually the model that met the builder’s specification, paired with duct systems designed to the same standard. Where a homeowner has since finished a basement or added a bonus room, that original system now serves more square footage than it was sized for, which shows up as long run times and rooms that never reach setpoint. Full Nelson provides furnace repair for all makes and models and looks at the whole system when replacement comes up.
Our services include:
Heat pumps move heat rather than generating it, delivering heating and cooling from one outdoor unit, and cold-climate models hold efficiency well below freezing. On acreage without natural gas service they replace electric resistance heat at a fraction of the running cost. Proper auxiliary heat sizing matters in this part of the state. Full Nelson provides heat pump service for all brands.
Our services include:
Heated winter air loses moisture rapidly, dropping indoor humidity to levels that cause static shocks, dry skin, irritated sinuses and damage to wood floors and cabinetry. Newer homes are built tighter than older ones, which improves efficiency but makes ventilation and filtration more important rather than less. Full Nelson installs whole-home humidifiers, high-efficiency filters and UV light systems.
Our services include:
Breathe Easier
Missouri summers combine heat and humidity that make air conditioning essential. Full Nelson provides air conditioning services throughout Kearney and northern Clay County.

Air conditioners installed during Kearney’s build-out are reaching the age where compressors, capacitors and coils begin failing, and many are still the original builder-specified equipment. Refrigerant leaks cut capacity, dirty coils block heat transfer, and failing capacitors force compressors to work against themselves. Outdoor units on properties bordering open country take in more field dust and seed than units in a tight suburban yard. Full Nelson technicians diagnose accurately and complete AC repairs that fix the actual fault.
Our services include:
Finished basements, bonus rooms over garages and sunroom additions are common in Kearney’s newer housing, and the original duct system was rarely extended properly to serve them. On larger properties, detached shops, barns and garages are on no system at all. Mini splits handle both, and they let you condition a workshop only when you are in it.
Tighter new construction holds humidity as well as it holds conditioned air, and a finished basement through a Missouri summer is where that shows first. Whole-home dehumidifiers control it more effectively than running the air conditioner harder. Combined with upgraded filtration and UV treatment, the difference is measurable, and on properties bordering farmland filtration earns its cost quickly.
Duct systems in production-built homes go in quickly, and gaps at connections and seams are common even in recent construction. That leakage wastes conditioned air into attics and crawl spaces and creates the hot and cold rooms homeowners describe. Full Nelson provides duct cleaning and duct sealing.
Kearney sits north of the metro core where feeder lines run long distances across open country. Ice storms and straight-line winds bring them down, and this is Tornado Alley, so severe weather outages are a regular feature rather than an occasional one. Properties on private wells lose water completely without power. In a city on combined sewers, an outage during heavy rain also stops the sump pump at the moment it is most needed.
A standby generator starts automatically within seconds and keeps the well pump, sump pump, refrigerator, HVAC system and lights running until crews restore service.
Full Nelson sizes generators to your home’s actual electrical load and handles the complete installation, including the automatic transfer switch and fuel connection.
For Local Businesses
Kearney’s commercial and industrial development centres on the Innovation Business Park at the Interstate 35 and Route 92 interchange, owned by the non-profit Kearney Area Development Council. The park covers 11.31 acres across eight lots zoned light industrial and carries Enhanced Enterprise Zone designation, with city water at 3.9 million gallons per day, city sewer at 1.25 million gallons per day, a six-inch Spire natural gas main and 12.47kv electric on dual circuits from separate substations. It is one minute from I-35 and twenty minutes from Kansas City International.
The Kearney School District R-1 is the largest institutional employer, carrying equipment loads that have to hold through a full academic year. The city also supports a genuine tourism trade around its Jesse James heritage, with the birthplace site and museum, the Jesse James Festival and the Kearney Historic Museum in an 1870 downtown building, alongside the adjacent Watkins Woolen Mill State Historic Site. Hospitality and food service operations there need refrigeration and climate control that hold through a season.
Full Nelson provides commercial HVAC services and commercial plumbing, including scheduled maintenance programs.
