You just put the rest of dinner down the disposal, and, what is that? It’s not doing anything, or it’s humming, or it sounds horrible…what’s going on? All kinds of bad thoughts can go through your mind as you think about what’s happening here. Today, we have a couple tips to ensure that your disposal is doing fine, and if these tips don’t work, then it may be time to call the plumber!
First of all, with the disposal OFF and no water running, see if there is anything in the disposal that shouldn’t be there (metal, glass, plastic, etc.)
Second, every disposal has a reset button (see diagram). With the disposal OFF, press the reset button and try turning on the disposal. Hopefully that worked!
If that didn’t work, there is still one more thing you can do. You can use a Hexagon, or Allen wrench that came with the disposal. If you don’t have one, you can purchase one at a hardware store. Insert the wrench inside the middle part of the disposal (see diagram), and twist it left and right, or right and left to try and free up whatever may be blocking it up to work right. Again, do not have the disposal on at any time while trying to trouble shoot a problem. Once you have twisted the bottom with the wrench, take it out and try the disposal again.
Hopefully, one of the above trouble shooting methods worked for you.
They are very common problems. If not, give us a call and we will be
happy to help!
